Guided Discovery, Coaching, and the Deeper Purpose of Surfing
Why Surf Coaching Goes Deeper Than Standing Up on a Surfboard
Most people think surf lessons are about one thing:
Standing up.
And sure—getting to your feet matters. Catching your first wave matters. Having fun matters.
But at SurfLife Surf School, we believe great surf coaching goes much deeper than simply teaching someone how to ride a wave.
Surfing is not just a sport.
It is movement, fear, confidence, patience, awareness, humility, and growth—all wrapped into one experience.
For some people, surfing becomes freedom.
For others, therapy.
For many, it becomes something they didn’t know they needed.
That is why at SurfLife, we do not simply teach surfing.
We coach people.
And real coaching is personal.
Because no two surfers are the same.
Coaching vs Instruction: There Is a Difference
Anyone can instruct.
An instructor can tell you what to do.
“Paddle.”“Stand up.”“Move faster.”
But coaching goes deeper.
A coach learns how you learn.
A coach adapts.
A coach understands that every person walking down the trail to Short Sands Beach arrives with different fears, personalities, strengths, confidence levels, and experiences.
Some people are nervous.
Some are analytical.
Some want every detail explained.
Others just want to jump in and feel it.
A good coach notices these things.
Because great coaching is not one-size-fits-all.
It is individual.
At SurfLife Surf School, one of the first things we begin doing—sometimes without people even realizing—is learning how you learn.
It starts with conversations.
Walking to the beach.
Talking story.
Asking questions.
Trying to understand who you are before we even paddle out.
Because coaching starts long before someone catches their first wave.
Command Style Teaching: Structure, Safety, and Confidence
At SurfLife, we use different coaching styles depending on the person, conditions, and what someone needs in that moment.
One of those methods is called command style teaching.
Command style teaching is direct.
Clear.
Simple.
Sometimes, especially in surfing, people need immediate instruction.
The ocean moves fast.
Waves do not wait.
Safety matters.
This style sounds like:
“Hands here.”“Eyes up.”“Paddle hard.”“Pop up now.”“Stay low.”
For beginners—especially on the cold waters of the North Oregon Coast—this structure matters.
Too much information at once can overwhelm people.
Sometimes confidence is built through calm, clear leadership.
At SurfLife, command style teaching becomes important during:
Safety and Ocean Awareness
How to fall safely.
How to handle a board.
How to understand currents and conditions.
How to respect the ocean.
Fundamentals and Technique
Learning the pop-up.
Board positioning.
Timing waves.
Body mechanics.
Moments That Require Fast Decisions
Sometimes conditions shift.
Sometimes timing matters.
Sometimes someone simply needs direct coaching to build trust and confidence.
And in those moments, a coach leads clearly.
Because good coaching is not about ego.
It is about helping people feel safe enough to grow.

Guided Discovery: Helping Surfers Learn for Themselves
But command style teaching is only part of coaching.
Once the fundamentals begin making sense, we begin moving into something deeper:
Guided discovery.
Guided discovery means helping people figure things out for themselves.
Instead of simply giving answers, we ask questions.
“What felt different on that wave?”
“Why do you think that one worked?”
“Did you notice where your weight was?”
“What changed when you slowed down?”
The goal is not simply helping someone stand up once.
The goal is helping someone begin understanding surfing.
Because eventually, every surfer paddles out without a coach.
And when that day comes, we want students leaving with more than memories.
We want them leaving with confidence.
Awareness.
Surfer IQ.
The ability to read waves.
Understand timing.
Recognize conditions.
And trust themselves.
Because surfing is not about perfection.
It is about progression.
Everyone Learns Differently
One of the biggest things we believe at SurfLife is this:
People learn differently.
Some people are visual learners.
They need to see movements demonstrated.
Watch body position.
Observe timing.
Some people are auditory learners.
They connect with verbal coaching and explanations.
Sometimes one sentence changes everything.
Others are kinesthetic learners.
They learn by doing.
By feeling.
By repetition.
They simply need time in the water.
Most people are a combination of all three.
And part of being a coach is figuring out what works best for each individual person.
A great coach does not force people into one system.
A great coach adapts the system to the person.
Because teaching surfing is not just teaching surfing.
It is teaching humans.
And humans are beautifully different.
Coaching Calmness in Chaos
The ocean teaches something powerful:
You cannot control everything.
Waves change.
Conditions change.
Confidence changes.
Sometimes things click instantly.
Sometimes they do not.
Sometimes someone gets frustrated.
Sometimes fear shows up.
Sometimes people surprise themselves.
Part of coaching is reading all of that.
Knowing when to push.
Knowing when to slow things down.
Knowing when someone needs encouragement.
And knowing when someone simply needs another chance.
A coach teaches calmness in chaos.
Composure in uncertainty.
Confidence through discomfort.
Because learning often happens just outside comfort zones.
And surfing has a funny way of teaching resilience.
You fall.
You laugh.
You paddle back out.
You try again.
That lesson carries far beyond surfing.
More Than a Lesson
For me personally, coaching has never felt like just a job.
Honestly, it feels like something deeper.
Something I was called to do.
Yes, SurfLife Surf School is part of the service industry.
But for me, service means serving people.
Helping someone overcome fear.
Helping families make memories.
Helping people reconnect with nature.
Helping someone realize they are capable of more than they thought.
Sometimes the best moments have nothing to do with the wave itself.
Sometimes it is the smile afterward.
The confidence.
The moment someone says:
“I can’t believe I actually did that.”
That matters.
Because surfing is bigger than standing up on a board.
Sometimes, out in the ocean, people reconnect with something they forgot they needed.
A little confidence.
A little humility.
A little freedom.
Maybe even a little piece of themselves.
And that is what we try to create at SurfLife Surf School.
Not just surf lessons.
But meaningful experiences.
One wave at a time. 🤙
